John Baily

Ph.D., Reader in Ethnomusicology at Goldsmith’s College, University of London, and a renowned performer of Afghan music. He is the author of Music of Afghanistan: Professional Musicians in the City of Herat (Cambridge Studies in Ethnomusicology, Cambridge University Press, 1988) and the director of the film Amir. He has been a dedicated researcher of Afghan music and his ethnomusicological interests address various topics, such as looking at musical instruments and the human body, filmmaking as music ethnography, censorship and music, and learning to perform as a research technique.
