Smaragda Chrysostomou

Currently a lecturer for Music Education in the Department of Musical Studies in the University of Athens. Since the completion of her Ph.D. in Reading University in 1997 she has worked as a music teacher in secondary education in Greece. She has given in-service training seminars for music teachers organised by local education authorities in different parts of Greece. She has also taught music education in the Democritus University of Thrace, at the Department for Primary Teacher Education, for two academic years. She was a guest speaker in the post-graduate students in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigne in 1999 and 2003. She has published articles in journals in Greece and elsewhere. She has presented papers related to her work in all ISME conferences since 1994 and is also a regular presenter in the ISME Commission Music in Schools and Teacher Education. She has presented her work in many educational and music-educational conferences in England and Greece. She has reviewed articles for the International Journal of Education in the Arts, the Journal for Arts and Learning and the Journal of OMEP. She is an active member of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the Music Educators’ National Conference (MENC) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She has a diploma in piano, and as a musician-pianist she has performed in Athens, Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Komotini and Nafplio.
