Review of Theory and Praxis of Music

Renate Wieland

After studying music (piano with Jürgen Uhde), German literature and philosophy (with Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno) and attaining a Ph.D. with a study on Goethe and Hegel (Schein – Kritik – Utopie [Appearance – Critique – Utopia], edition text+kritik, ²1992), she became an assistant to Hermann Schweppenhäuser in philosophy with a chief focus on aesthetics at the University of Lüneburg, Germany. Following this, and alongside work in music pedagogy, she had a long collaboration with Jürgen Uhde, which produced the book Denken und Spielen (Thinking and Playing), a theory of musical performance (Bärenreiter-Verlag, 1988). The concept of a study on the performer and the body as the instrument of music was also formed during that period of collaboration. After Uhde’s death this study was further developed and extended, and was published in 2002 by Bärenreiter-Verlag under the title of Forschendes Üben (Investigative Practising). This theory was tested during the numerous international music college master-classes as well as the long-standing joint summer courses of the “Studio for Pianistic Interpretation” in Weingarten, Germany. Alongside music-pedagogical work, lectures and classes, her current central focus is a study on piano music by Schubert.
