Günter Mayer

He was born in 1930 in Berlin. He studied Philosophy and Musicology at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and then taught in the filed of the science of civilization. He was elected professor in 1980. His publications are numerous, especially on Aesthetics, Aesthetics and the Sociology of Music, the Theory and the Aesthetics of the Media. He is a collaborator of Ästhetik heute, Neues Handbuch der Musikwissenschaft (volume 10) and Historisch-kritisches Wörterbuch des Marxismus (volumes 1, 2 & 4), and the editor of Hanns Eisler’s theoretical texts. He taught as a guest professor in most of the European countries, in the USA, Canada and Brazil. He was a member of the editorial board of Beiträge zur Musikwissenschaft, a member of the Music Council of the former East Germany (DDR), a member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (1983-1985), and since 1994 he is a member of the board of the International Hanns Eisler Society.
