He was born in 1923. Agregé of Philosophy (1948), he was teaching for ten years in different French colleges, then became Associate Professor (1958) and finally Professor of Philosophy of Art at Sorbonne (1972). He has published a great number of works, most of it translated in English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, on artistic creativity, Iannis Xenakis, Beethoven, Schoenberg etc, and also many articles, mostly in the Revue d’Esthétique, in which he was editor-in-chief for thirty years.
