Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring”: An Operatic Study of Provincial Oppression

The present article is divided into two parts. The first part is mainly historical: it deals with the formation of the “English Opera Group”, the production at Glyndebourne of Albert Herring, and with the foundation of the Ardeburgh Festival and the public reaction that followed. Part two attempts to give a scene-by-scene musical and dramatic analysis of Albert Herring (illustrated by music examples), and to assess the delineation of Britten’s characters in this opera.
