Manolis Kalomiris

About the Harmonization of Folk Songs

Manolis Kalomiris (1883-1962) was not only the most important composer of the Greek National School, but also the author of theoretical works in Greek language (i.e., Harmony, Counterpoint, Morphology). The text hereby presented is one of his reports as a Member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. It contains the description of the different kinds of modes and scales in Greek folk music and their possibilities of harmonization, on which the so-called Greek National Music School (initiated by him) is based.
