German Romanticism in the First Half of the 19th Century: Music and Literature

It is difficult to define the various meanings and aspects of romanticism and to limit the beginning and the end of this period, as long as the first romantic ideas of the late 18th century have coexisted with the norms of the classic period. The article attempts to elucidate the fundamental aspects of the romantic period, intimating the influences from the corresponding movement in the German literature in the first half of the 19th century, just as they are indicated in the different theoretical and litterary texts of that era. However, the period between 1800-1830 is proved to be of particular importance, as at these first decades of the 19th century the aesthetic ideals of the romanticism are established and the various tendencies, which characterize in general the composition in the 19th century, are also expressed.
