of practical performance of Byzantine music. The writer examines the scanty sources and documents of polyphonic improvisation after the 10th century, and puts forward essential questions regarding the connection of a memory-aid notation and the practical music performance, taking into account evidence from Western theoretical and practical treatises. Her aim is – considering aesthetic and technical features and historical facts – to show a line of influences connecting Ancient Greek, Byzantine and early European music.
