The Practical Performance of Byzantine Music

Translation in Greek: Evgenia Akrida
The article refers to the problem of practical performance of Byzantine music. The writer examines the scanty sources and documents of polyphonic improvisation after the 10th century, and puts forward essential questions regarding the connection of a memory-aid notation and the practical music performance, taking into account evidence from Western theoretical and practical treatises. Her aim is – considering aesthetic and technical features and historical facts – to show a line of influences connecting Ancient Greek, Byzantine and early European music.
