Century Byzantium through the Texts of the Fathers of the Church
Apart from some short descriptions from Persian emissaries and a few accounts of clergymen and crusaders, we
hardly know anything regarding the secular music during the ages of the Byzantine Empire. This article will attempt to delineate and describe the secular Byzantine music
of the 4th century, by studying and interpreting the judgments of the Fathers of the Church regarding secular Byzantine music
(and theatre).
