Franz Schubert’s Symphony in C major D. 944, “The Great”. An Essay on the First Movement

What is actually attempted in this article is a very first analytical approach to the first movement of Schubert’s Symphony D. 944, “The Great”. Great emphasis is placed on issues pertaining to the harmonic relationships between the dominant keys (third relationships, “exposition of the three keys”), as well as the pattern relations which run through the first movement, as much as through the entire symphony. Finally, the intensively dynamic element in Schubert’s music is highly stressed, an element mainly expressed through constant dramatic climax.
