A tribute to Ion Zottos (1944-2010)

The issue 21 of the review Mousikologia is dedicated to the memory of the late Prof. Ion Zottos (1944-2010). Ion Zottos belongs to the founding members (1985) of the present review, the first musicological Greek review in the postwar period, remaining till his death a main member of the board. Articles about his life and work as composer and historical musicologist are included in the Encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, Personenteil) and also in lexica about Greek music. He was also founding member of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens and its faculty of “Historical & Systematical Musicology” that supports in the recent period the review Mousikologia.

The first part of the issue 21 includes a short dedication to his life and work and an extra article in French about the relation between music and literature written by his friend and collaborator Prof. Ioanna Konstantoulakou-Chantzou (see the related abstract). The second part consists of the Proceedings of the Symposium dedicated to his memory, which took place at the Central University Hall under the title “Aspects of Musical Historiography”. In the final concert, three works by Zottos, among others, were interpreted by his friends: the artists Kostas Mavrogenis, Maria Marketou, Theodoros Yiatras, Kimon Maraghoudakis, Dr. Chara Tombra and the internationally recognized pianist, Prof. emeritus at the University of Arizona, Nicholas Zumbro, who flew to Athens to honor his long time friend with his art of piano playing (Funérailles by Liszt).
