The issue of National Schools of Music is an extremely complicated one, due to the distinct political, social and musical prerequisites that should concur for their emergence. Although National Schools flourished in the 19th century, a second wave that appeared around 1900 was characterized by conservatism and ideological connotations. Of special importance are “national” characteristics in works of the New Music (Bartók etc.). The question of the relation between national and musical value is put forward, in conclusion.
