Iouri Semenov

He was born on Odessa in 1955, where he is at present professor at the Odessa State A. V. Nezhdanova Conservatoire. He studied Musicology, History of Music and Orchestration in Moscow Tchaikovsky Academy of Music. His Ph.D. dissertation is entitled The Evolution of the Art of Orchestration in Baroque’s Music and Music Theory (prima e seconda prattica).
Semenov was scientific director of the Glinka Museum of Musical Culture in Moscow, art director of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra and other institutions. He is now Secretary General of the Odessa branch of the Ukrainian Union of Composers, member of the board of directors of the Ukrainian branch of the International Society for Contemporary Music, director of international festivals programming in Ukraine, chief editor of the CD-Rom New Music in Ukraine, and editor of the Dictionary of Contemporary Ukrainian Composers (under publication). He is also director of the Music Information Center of Odessa – Ukraine, as well as the editor of a large number of musicological editions. He has written over one hundred articles published in Ukraine and abroad. He speaks ten languages. He has won a DAAD scholarship, and in 2002 a scholarship of the Alexandros Onassis Foundation. Iouri Semenov is a member of the Advisory Board of Musicology (Musicología).
