He was born in Cairo, Egypt. He studied theory and piano at the “Greek Conservatory” and the “Orpheum”, and composition with Jannis Ioannides. In 1981 he went to Paris for post-graduate studies (University Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne). He followed courses in musicology and musical aesthetics, with Michel Guiomar and Daniel Charles, and composition with Iannis Xenakis. In 1982 he received the post graduate diploma D.E.A., submitting the thesis Mathematical Procedures in the Work of Bartók and Xenakis. In 1995 he got a Ph.D. degree from the Music Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His thesis was titled The Crisis of the Theme in the Works of the Second Viennese School Composers: Schönberg, Berg, Webern.Zervos’ compositions have been performed in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, France and the USA, and published by the music publishers K. Papagrigoriou – Ch. Nakas. Two CDs have been recently published with his works (Eros and Psyche, 1999, and Study for String Quarter, 2000). As a musicologist, Zervos has published several articles on 20th century music, as well as two books (Schönberg, Berg, Webern: The Crisis of Music through the Crisis of the Theme and Forms, and Nikos Skalkottas and the European Tradition in the early 20th Century). He has also participated in several congresses. He is an assistant professor at the Music Department of the University of Athens, teaching musical analysis and composition, and a member both of the Advisory and the Editorial Board of Musicologia.
