Towards a critical reconstitution of the musical canon

One of the victims of the postmodern deconstructive attacks was the validity of the musical canon, the very backbone of the modern historiography of music. A task of primary importance for critical musicology is therefore to critically restitute the validity of the musical canon in terms of a non dogmatic and rational axiology along the steps of Th. W. Adorno. In the musical writings of the latter dispersed are direct or indirect references to axiological issues, articulated as issues of “quality”, “binding-ness” (Verbindlichkeit), “objectivity”, “importance”, etc, of musical works. In reference to these issues one could undertake to reconstruct Adorno’s latent critical axiology.
