Music Analysis and Interpretation

A Contribution to the Centenary since Th. W. Adornos Birth

Tuesday, 4 – Thursday, 6 November 2003
The Athens Concert Hall

The Second International Congress of Musicology in Greece will be held at The Athens Concert Hall. The congress is organized by the journal Musicology (Musicología), Review of Theory and Praxis of Music (Editor-in-Chief: Prof. Oly Psychopedis-Frangou), in collaboration with the Music Library of Greece “Lilian Voudouri” (Head: Dr. Christoph Stroux) and with the Athens Concert Hall, supported by the Goethe-Institut Athen, the British Council in Greece and the Institut Français d’Athènes.
Aim of the congress is to present and promote the discussion on the basic tendencies in Music Analysis and Interpretation, in methodology and the application of these disciplines, to present and promote the discussion on the issues concerning their value in music understanding. Music analysis constitutes the main methodological instrument for musicologists, composers and musicians that – either explicitly or implicitly – have reflected their concern about its relation with music theory, music history and the interpretation of music. Nowadays, the methodological question about the relation between analysis and the meaning of the musical work and its historical nature is set in a context dominated by the use of new research and reproduction technology.
Besides, the congress is dedicated to the centenary since Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno’s birth. He emphasized on the importance of the analysis in “deciphering” the aesthetic and sociological aspects of the works.
